Understanding Your Legal Rights
Recent legal changes have expanded survivors’ ability to pursue justice—even for abuse that occurred years ago.
Key laws include:
- New York Child Victims Act (CVA):
Allows survivors of childhood sexual abuse to file civil claims until age 55 and previously reopened expired claims. - New York City Gender-Motivated Violence Act (GMVA):
A current look-back window (2026–2027) allows certain previously time-barred claims to be filed. - Institutional Liability:
Survivors may pursue claims not only against abusers, but also against organizations that enabled or failed to prevent abuse. - Evolving Federal Laws:
Legislative efforts continue to expand survivors’ rights and eliminate time limits for civil claims.
Survivors Recovered Hundreds of Millions Through Legal Action
